Mit mindestens 300.000 Arten sind die Blütenpflanzen die mit Abstand größte Pflanzengruppe, zu der auch die meisten Nutz- und Heilpflanzen gehören. Die ersten Blütenpflanzen sind vor rund 140 Millionen Jahren in der Kreidezeit entstanden, als noch Dinosaurier auf der Erde lebten. Der Ursprung der Blütenpflanzen und deren rasante Evolution wurde schon von Charles Darwin als “abominable mystery”, als ein schreckliches Mysterium, bezeichnet, und ist noch immer eines der größten, ungelösten Rätsel in der Biologie.
