Neues Forschungsprojekt zu informellen Märkten nach dem Ende der Sowjetunion

VolkswagenStiftung fördert internationale Verbundforschung zum Handel abseits staatlicher Regulationen in Zentralasien und im Kaukasus

Tübinger Wissenschaftler haben für das Forschungsprojekt „Informal Markets and Trade in Central Asia and the Caucasus“ eine Förderung der VolkswagenStiftung in Höhe von rund 490.000 Euro eingeworben. Das internationale Projekt erforscht die Rolle lokaler Märkte und die Mobilität von Händlern und Waren im Kaukasus und in Zentralasien nach dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion. Auch die Nachbarregionen Nordpakistan und die autonome Region Xinjiang in Westchina beziehen die Forscher mit ein. Dafür arbeiten insgesamt 15 Wissenschaftler aus den Bereichen Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie, Geschichte und Politikwissenschaften aus Deutschland, Armenien, Georgien, Kasachstan, Kirgistan, Pakistan und der Schweiz zusammen. Koordiniert wird das Forschungsprojekt, das im April 2016 startet und bis 2019 läuft, von Dr. Susanne Fehlings von der Abteilung Ethnologie am Asien-Orient-Institut der Universität Tübingen.

Heat of mantle sets height of mid-ocean ridges

By  analyzing the speed of seismic waves generated by earthquakes, scientists have shown that temperature differences deep within Earth’s mantle control the elevation and volcanic activity along mid-ocean ridges, the colossal mountain ranges that line the ocean floor. Recent research sheds new light on how temperature in the depths of the mantle influences the contours of the Earth’s crust.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Scientists have shown that temperature differences deep within Earth’s mantle control the elevation and volcanic activity along mid-ocean ridges, the colossal mountain ranges that line the ocean floor.
