Freiburger Neurowissenschaftler erschließen neue Diagnose- und Therapiewege bei Schläfenlappenepilepsie

Heute vom Fahrrad gestürzt und in zehn Jahren an Epilepsie erkrankt? Solche Zusammenhänge wirken weit hergeholt, sind aber durchaus möglich, sagen Freiburger Forscherinnen und Forscher. Mithilfe neuester Verfahren der Magnetresonanztomografie haben Prof. Dr. Carola Haas, Klinik für Neurochirurgie, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Hennig, Klinik für Radiologie, und Prof. Dr. Ulrich Egert, Institut für Mikrosystemtechnik der Universität Freiburg, in Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. Dr. Jan Korvink vom Karlsruher Institut für Technologie gezeigt, wie bestimmte Störungen des Hippocampus eine medikamentenresistente Epilepsie in Gang setzen. There may be far fewer galaxies further out in the universe then might be expected, according to a new study led by Michigan State University.

Over the years, the Hubble Space Telescope has allowed astronomers to look deep into the universe. The long view stirred theories of untold thousands of distant, faint galaxies. The new research, appearing in the current issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters, however, offers a theory that reduces the estimated number of the most distant galaxies by 10 to 100 times. New research from UCL shows we will soon uncover the origin of the ultraviolet light that bathes the cosmos, helping scientists understand how galaxies were built.

The study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters by UCL cosmologists Dr Andrew Pontzen and Dr Hiranya Peiris (both UCL Physics & Astronomy), together with collaborators at Princeton and Barcelona Universities, shows how forthcoming astronomical surveys will reveal what lit up the cosmos.
