In energy policy, political polarization often gets in the way of commonsense solutions to problems.
General Electric recently announced a technological advance that would allow pipeline companies to use drone-mounted cameras to inspect their lines for corrosion and leaks. This is the kind of development that could, with the right regulatory support, make huge strides toward preventing costly and harmful spills and solving other important problems afflicting America’s aging pipeline infrastructure. Physiker der Universität Wien erforschen Ursprung der Elementarteilchen
Auch nach der spektakulären Entdeckung des Higgs-Teilchens 2012 am CERN bleibt die Suche nach einer umfassenden Theorie der fundamentalen Wechselwirkungen eines der großen ungelösten Probleme in der theoretischen Physik. Besondere Schwierigkeiten bereitet die Zusammenführung von Quantenmechanik und Gravitation. Physiker um Harold Steinacker von der Universität Wien untersuchen mit sogenannten Matrix-Modellen einen alternativen Zugang zur favorisierten Stringtheorie. Dazu publizierten sie kürzlich im Fachjournal “Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics”. (more…)
