Is hair the root to understanding our stress levels?

Women with lower incomes have higher concentrations of the stress hormone cortisol in their hair, according to a new study from UCL.

The study also found that women whose income has gone up over the last 4 years have lower cortisol levels than those whose income went down, suggesting an association between long-term financial strain and stress hormones. (more…)

For treating a leading cause of osteoporosis, surgery is better than widely used medications

UCLA study finds that using drugs to combat hyperparathyroidism is worse than doing nothing at all

While most cases of osteoporosis are caused by normal aging, another leading cause of the bone-loss disease is a condition called hyperparathyroidism, in which the parathyroid glands release an excessive amount of a hormone that regulates the body’s calcium levels. (more…)

New method of drug delivery may be safer and more effective against pancreatic cancer

UCLA researchers use nanoparticles to send chemotherapy drug directly to the tumor site, reducing damage to healthy tissues

The overall five-year survival rate for people with pancreatic cancer is just 6 percent, and there is an urgent need for new treatment options. More than 80 percent of pancreatic cancer diagnoses occur too late for surgery, making chemotherapy the only possible treatment. (more…)

Meditation and ballet associated with wisdom, study says

Wisdom, traditionally associated with old age, is nonetheless found in people of all ages. So, what makes a person wise?

A new study, “The Relationship between Mental and Somatic Practices and Wisdom,” published Feb. 18 in PLOS ONE, confirms an age-old conception that meditation is associated with wisdom. Surprisingly, it also concludes that somatic, or physical, practices such as classical ballet might lead to increased wisdom. (more…)
