Aging erodes genetic control, but it’s flexible
In yeast at least, the aging process appears to reduce an organism’s ability to silence certain genes that need to be silenced. Now researchers at Brown University who study the biology of aging have shown that the loss of genetic control occurs in fruit flies as well. Results appear online in the journal Aging. (more…)

Berkeley Researchers Develop Technique For Imaging Individual Carbon Nanotubes
Despite their almost incomprehensibly small size – a diameter about one ten-thousandth the thickness of a human hair – single-walled carbon nanotubes come in a plethora of different “species,” each with its own structure and unique combination of electronic and optical properties. Characterizing the structure and properties of an individual carbon nanotube has involved a lot of guesswork – until now.
Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California (UC) Berkeley have developed a technique that can be used to identify the structure of an individual carbon nanotube and characterize its electronic and optical properties in a functional device. Der Bestseller «Fifty Shades of Grey» verklärt Gewalt gegen Frauen. Zu diesem Schluss kommt eine Studie der Ohio State University.
Die Fachzeitschrift «Journal of Women’s Health» hat die Studie online veröffentlicht. «Fifty Shades of Grey» schildert die Beziehung zwischen der 22-jährigen Studentin Anastasia Steele und dem sechs Jahre älteren Unternehmer und Multimillionär Christian Grey. Die beiden leben eine von Gewalt geprägte sexuelle Beziehung nach vereinbarten Regeln, denen beide zugestimmt haben. Weltweit wurden mehr als 70 Millionen Exemplare der Trilogie verkauft. (more…)

Nanoscale Coatings Improve Stability and Efficiency of Devices for Renewable Fuel Generation
Splitting water into its components, two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, is an important first step in achieving carbon-neutral fuels to power our transportation infrastructure – including automobiles and planes.
Now, North Carolina State University researchers and colleagues from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have shown that a specialized coating technique can make certain water-splitting devices more stable and more efficient. Berlin/Moskau – Auf der am Freitag in Moskau zu Ende gegangenen Eisbär-Konferenz haben sich die arktischen Anrainerstaaten auf die Eckpfeiler eines umfassenden Aktionsplans verständigt. Die Naturschutzorganisation WWF erklärte, die wichtigsten Ziele auf dem Ministertreffen seien erreicht worden und die internationalen Schutzbemühungen für den Eisbär und seinen Lebensraum hätten politische Rückendeckung erhalten.
