Inakzeptable Hormon-Anwendungen in der Schweinezucht. Bundesagrarminister Friedrich muss Einsatz verbieten

Der Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) hat Bundesagrarminister Hans-Peter Friedrich aufgefordert, den Einsatz von Hormonen zur Leistungssteigerung in der Ferkelzucht zu verbieten. Die systematische Anwendung von Hormonpräparaten insbesondere in größeren Schweineställen diene vor allem dazu, den Betreuungsaufwand der Muttertiere zu verringern und die Ferkelanzahl zu erhöhen, sagte der BUND-Vorsitzende Hubert Weiger. Dies sei weder mit dem Tierschutz noch mit dem Schutz der Umwelt vor dem Eintrag risikobehafteter Stoffe zu vereinbaren, sagte Weiger. (more…)

Study finds that human occupation of an area may not contribute to population decline of an endangered species

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Conservation of a protected or endangered species requires frequent monitoring and the dynamic techniques biologists utilize to ensure the survival of threatened animals. Often, scientists study biodiversity at all levels—from genes to entire ecosystems. Currently, researchers at the University of Missouri are employing genotyping to study movement patterns of African forest elephants in protected and unprotected regions of Gabon to better understand how human occupation of these areas might affect elephants on the African continent. Genotyping is helping conservation biologists determine the best course of action to ensure biodiversity and the preservation of various species in the U.S. and abroad. (more…)

The Connected Consequences of River Dams

In a case study of dams on the upper Missouri River, USGS researchers have demonstrated that an upstream dam is still a major control of river dynamics where the backwater effects of a downstream reservoir begin. In light of this finding, the conventional understanding of how a dam can influence a river may have to be adjusted to account for the fact that effects of river dams can interact with one another. Strömungsverhältnisse und zum Beispiel die Vorgänge der
Wolkenbildung, somit “das Wetter”, zu verstehen und in weiterer Folge

Book explains astrobiology for a general audience

In the late 1990s, the University of Washington created what was arguably the world’s first graduate program in astrobiology, aimed at preparing scientists to hunt for life away from Earth. In 2001, David Catling became one of the first people brought to the UW specifically to teach astrobiology.

Catling, a UW professor of Earth and space sciences, is the author of Astrobiology: A Very Short Introduction, the 370^th offering in the Oxford University Press series of “very short introduction” books by experts in various fields. Catling was commissioned by editors to write the book, which was published in the United States on Jan. 1. Following are his answers to some questions about the book and astrobiology. (more…)

Upcycling: Wie Phoenix aus der Asche

Recycling kennt jeder: Müll wird wiederverwertet. Um knappe Ressoucen zu schonen, erobert diese Idee nun auch die Modebranche. Aus gebrauchten oder überschüssigen Materialien entstehen hochwertige Einzelstücke und einen klingenden Namen hat der neue Trend auch bekommen: Upcycling.

Ob Lederretouren aus der Sofaproduktion, ausgediente Feuerwehrschläuche, alte Armeedecken oder schlicht und einfach Reste aus der Textilproduktion: Upcycling hat den entscheidenden Vorteil, dass Abfallprodukte oder nutzlose Stoffe in hochwertigere Produkte umgewandelt werden. Im Gegensatz zum normalen Recycling ist diese Form des Recyclings also eine echte Aufwertung.
