Braunkohleverstromung: Milliardengewinne auf Kosten des Klimas

Deutsche Umwelthilfe berechnet: RWE und Vattenfall erwirtschaften 2013 mit Braunkohlestrom knapp zwei Milliarden Euro – Hohe Rentabilität von Braunkohlekraftwerken verhindert echtes Umdenken beim Klimaschutz

Das Geschäft mit der Braunkohle boomt: Im Jahr 2013 erzielten die Energieversorger RWE und Vattenfall mit Braunkohlestrom einen Gewinn von jeweils rund einer Milliarde Euro. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt die Deutsche Umwelthilfe e. V. (DUH) in einer Berechnung auf Grundlage der aktuellen Geschäftsberichte der beiden Unternehmen. Grund für den Gewinn sind insbesondere der darniederliegende Emissionshandel sowie Vergünstigungen für die Braunkohle etwa bei der EEG-Umlage. Die DUH fordert deshalb von der Bundesregierung, sich endlich für einen wirksamen Emissionshandel auf europäischer Ebene einzusetzen, der eine CO2-ärmere Energieerzeugung attraktiver macht. (more…)

Study shows blue logos invoke feelings of reliability, red logos invoke expertise

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Many studies have shown that a company’s logo is one of the most important aspects of marketing and advertising a brand, or features that distinctly identifies a company’s product or service from its competitors. Now, a researcher at the University of Missouri has found that the specific colors used in a company’s logo have a significant impact on how that logo, and the brand as a whole, is viewed by consumers.

Jessica Ridgway, a doctoral student in the MU Department of Textile and Apparel Management, surveyed 184 adults using generic logos of different colors for fake companies that she created. She then asked participants to describe the emotions they felt toward the fake companies upon seeing each logo. Ridgway was able to identify key characteristics that each logo invoked, based on which colors were used. (more…)

Student Spotlight: Internship in D.C. will prepare Dinée Dorame to advocate for Indigenous women

Yale junior Dinée Dorame, a member of the Navajo Nation and Tábaahá (Edge of Water clan) born for Naakaii Dine’é (Mexican people), hopes one day to help improve the lives of Indigenous women through a career in law or as a policy maker.

As one of 12 students in the nation selected by the Udall Foundation to be a 2014 Native American Congressional Intern, Dorame will get a first-hand look at federal decision-making this summer. Only three other undergraduates were selected for the competitive internship, which places American Indian and Alaska Native students in positions in Senate and House offices, Cabinet departments, the White House, or on federal committees, so they can get an insider’s view of the federal government at work. Im All ist alles anders: Jede noch so kleine Zelle unseres Körpers merkt, dass die Schwerkraft fehlt, unsere Körperfunktionen sind verändert. So schwächt ein Aufenthalt im All auch das Immunsystem der Astronauten. Warum das so ist, wollen Forscher der Universität Magdeburg in zwei vom Raumfahrtmanagement des DLR organisierten Experimenten auf der Internationalen Raumstation ISS herausfinden. An Bord eines Dragon-Raumschiffs der US-amerikanischen Firma SpaceX sind am 18. April 2014 um 21.25 Uhr MESZ (15.25 Uhr Ortszeit) zwei Zellkulturen vom Weltraumbahnhof in Cape Canaveral (Florida) zur ISS gestartet. (more…)

North Carolina is the nation’s No. 3 strawberry producer, but many of the state’s berries grow on small plots lacking the acreage to carry out sustainable growing practices like crop rotation. That, combined with constant concerns about soil pathogens and reliance on chemicals to rid plants of ubiquitous pests like spider mites, puts immense pressure on these farms’ long-term health.

Can North Carolina withstand this pressure and keep its top-three status behind fruit and veggie behemoths California and Florida, the top two U.S. strawberry producers? (more…)

Malwettbewerb zum Thema „Müll im Meer“

Jahr für Jahr gelangen mehr als zehn Millionen Tonnen Abfälle in die Ozeane. Die Reste unserer Wegwerfgesellschaft kosten Millionen von Meerestieren das Leben. Es sterben weltweit bis zu eine Million Seevögel sowie 100.000 Wale, Delfine und Robben an den Folgen von Plastikabfällen. Bis zu 18.000 Plastikteile schwimmen nach Schätzungen des Umweltprogramms der Vereinten Nationen (UNEP) inzwischen auf jedem Quadratkilometer Wasseroberfläche. In manchen Regionen befindet sich sogar sechsmal mehr Plastik im Wasser als Plankton. Manche dieser Kunststoffe überdauern im Meer mehr als 450 Jahre. Über Plankton fressende Meerestiere wie Garnelen und Fische, aber auch über Muscheln, so genannte Filtrierer, gelangen diese giftigen Verbindungen schließlich in die marine Nahrungskette und können somit auch die menschliche Gesundheit gefährden. Neurons in the Brain Tune into Different Frequencies for Different Spatial Memory Tasks

AUSTIN, Texas — Your brain transmits information about your current location and memories of past locations over the same neural pathways using different frequencies of a rhythmic electrical activity called gamma waves, report neuroscientists at The University of Texas at Austin.

The research, published in the journal Neuron on April 17, may provide insight into the cognitive and memory disruptions seen in diseases such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s, in which gamma waves are disturbed. (more…)
