Researchers Create World’s Largest DNA Origami

Researchers from North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of Copenhagen have created the world’s largest DNA origami, which are nanoscale constructions with applications ranging from biomedical research to nanoelectronics.

“These origami can be customized for use in everything from studying cell behavior to creating templates for the nanofabrication of electronic components,” says Dr. Thom LaBean, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and senior author of a paper describing the work. Evolutionäre Erfolgsgeschichte der Insekten enträtselt

Sie krabbeln, kriechen oder fliegen: Insekten haben die Welt erobert und sind die mit Abstand artenreichste Tiergruppe. WissenschafterInnen des internationalen Großprojekts 1KITE ist es gelungen, mit einem molekularen Datensatz von 1.478 Genen und neu entwickelten Analysenverfahren den Stammbaum der Insekten aufzuklären und deren evolutionäre Erfolgsstory zu enträtseln. Von Seiten der Universität Wien ist ein Team rund um den Evolutionsbiologen Günther Pass beteiligt. Die ersten Ergebnisse wurden aktuell in der renommierten Fachzeitschrift “Science” publiziert.

Insekten sind vor rund 480 Millionen Jahren aus marinen Vorfahren hervorgegangen und haben sich zur vielfältigsten und erfolgreichsten Tiergruppe entwickelt. Auf dem Land stellen sie den größten Anteil der tierischen Biomasse und haben dadurch die terrestrischen Lebensräume entscheidend geprägt. Um die stammesgeschichtliche Entwicklung der Insekten zu klären und zu datieren, haben sich WissenschafterInnen aus den verschiedensten Disziplinen zum Großprojekt 1KITE (1000 Insect Transcriptome Evolution) zusammengefunden. Dies sind die ersten Beobachtungen, bei denen die beinahe-Endkonfiguration von ALMA zum Einsatz kam; es sind die schärfsten Aufnahmen, die jemals im Submillimeterbereich gemacht wurden. The first analysis of space dust collected by a special collector onboard NASA’s Stardust mission and sent back to Earth for study in 2006 suggests the tiny specks, which likely originated from beyond our solar system, are more complex in composition and structure than previously imagined. (more…)

Es ist ein ökologisches Desaster. Denn eine neue Untersuchung zeigt: Das Öl aus der versunkenen Bohrinsel „Deepwater Horizon“ verseucht 3200 Quadratkilometer des Meeresbodens.

Am 20. April 2010 kommen bei einer Explosion auf der BP-Bohrinsel „Deepwater Horizon“ elf Menschen ums Leben. Alle Löschversuche scheitern, die Bohrinsel versinkt zwei Tage später im Meer. Mit verheerenden Folgen: Die Ölleitungen brechen auf, und Öl strömt ungehindert ins Meer. Erst Wochen später kann der Ausfluss gestoppt werden. Die Ölkatastrophe ist damit aber nicht vorbei. (more…)

THE FUTURE OF CLOUD SERVICES

There is still quite a bit of interest in cloud services, and still no small demand for them. Due to this, there’s been a rush by all manner of service providers, both old and new, to provide cloud offerings to hungry customers. Indeed, of the roughly 20,000 North American service providers, just about 20 percent of these offer cloud services at this time, and this number is expected to grow sharply over the next few years. Yet at the same time, there will be a lot of attrition among these providers, if only because many of these organizations are only regional in nature, and offer only a small array of products — most of them just one or two.

At least that’s what Ashar Baig, a research director at Gigaom predicts. He provided his view on the near future and the recent past of cloud services at the recent ITEXPO in Las Vegas, Nevada. (more…)
