UCLA physicists demonstrate method to study atoms critical to medicine

Multicolored laser light is the key to cooling these atoms to nearly absolute zero

UCLA physicists have shown that shining multicolored laser light on rubidium atoms causes them to lose energy and cool to nearly absolute zero. This result suggests that atoms fundamental to chemistry, such as hydrogen and carbon, could also be cooled using similar lasers, an outcome that would allow researchers to study the details of chemical reactions involved in medicine.

(more…)

Resonance in Rainbow Bridge

University of Utah study listens to the natural bridge vibrate and sing

Utah’s iconic Rainbow Bridge hums with natural and man-made vibrations, according to a new University of Utah study, published September 21 in Geophysical Research Letters. The study characterizes the different ways the bridge vibrates and what frequencies and energy sources cause the rock structure to resonate. The vibrations are small, according to geology and geophysics professor Jeff Moore, but the study provides a baseline measure of the bridge’s structural integrity and shows how human activities can rattle solid rock.

(more…)

Why should a business invest in Virtual Data Rooms

Many businesses require the ability to share files between one another and with clients. In most cases, these files are confidential and require high levels of security to ensure that they don’t get lost or fall into the wrong hands. Before the digital age, businesses shared hard-copy documents by hand, which was risky as it required a level of trust that the file wouldn’t be misplaced, read or copied by unscrupulous employees or postal service workers. What’s more, the cost and time of transporting files were troublesome, and though faxing made this easier this was far from the most secure option. Paper files take up a room and require time to organize and locate when access is required. When the digital age first emerged, hard drives, floppy disks, CDs and flash drives were handled the same way as hard-copy files, with the added security potential of using password protection on files and the benefit of not taking up room in filing cabinets. However, the risk of loss and duplication, as well as the time and cost of transportation remained.
