Little known Croatia’s first female leader visits Russia

Since 2015 Croatia has its first female leadership – Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović. Although internationally not so well known like the German Chancellor Angela Merkel or the British Prime Minister Theresa May because of the Balkan state’s geographic position and less military significance in international politics, but the 49 years old Croatian President is an experienced diplomat and speaks almost every European language – English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and French. Das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) fördert das Projekt „ANTIBUG” der Chemikerin Dr. Karen Lienkamp mit 1,4 Millionen Euro über drei Jahre. In dem Projekt wird Lienkamp die Wirksamkeit einer von ihr entwickelten Oberflächenschicht testen, die bei Blasenkathetern und Wundverbänden zum Einsatz kommen könnte. (more…)

Scientists Discover Powerful Potential Pain Reliever

AUSTIN, Texas — A team of scientists led by chemists Stephen Martin and James Sahn at The University of Texas at Austin have discovered what they say is a powerful pain reliever that acts on a previously unknown pain pathway. The synthetic compound, known as UKH-1114, is as effective at relieving neuropathic pain in injured mice as a drug widely used for pain relief called gabapentin, but it works at a much lower dose, with longer duration of action. Hatching a new hypothesis about egg shape diversity

Mary Caswell Stoddard, an assistant professor in Princeton’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, proposes a far-ranging hypothesis regarding how and why bird eggs acquire their shapes. Her research, an interdisciplinary collaboration involving multiple authors, suggests that the shape of an egg for a given bird species may be driven in part by physiological features related to its capability for flight.
