Differences Between Military, Civilian Life Contribute to Veterans in the U.S. Criminal Justice System
MU researchers identify themes that could help policymakers keep veterans out of jail
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Military veterans currently account for 8 percent of the national prison and jail population, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. However, it is unclear how many veterans are under community supervision or involved community-intervention programs, and little data exist that illustrates how veterans enter the criminal justice system. Now, new research from the University of Missouri establishes that alcohol and drug use, difficulty adjusting to civilian life, and economic disadvantages are main contributors to criminal justice involvement for veterans. Information from this research could help policymakers reduce arrests and prevent incarcerations. (more…)

93 Texttafeln in assyrischer Sprache aus dem zweiten Jahrtausend v. Chr. warten auf Entzifferung
In der Region Kurdistan im Norden des Irak haben Archäologen des Instituts für die Kulturen des Alten Orients der Universität Tübingen unter der Leitung von Professor Peter Pfälzner bei ihren Ausgrabungen in der alten Stadt Bassetki überraschende Entdeckungen gemacht: Sie stießen unter anderem auf ein Keilschriftarchiv mit 93 Tontafeln, das sie in die Zeit um 1250 v. Chr. datieren, die Periode des mittelassyrischen Reichs. Was auf den Texttafeln festgehalten ist, bleibt vorerst ein Geheimnis. Sie müssen entziffert werden, was nach Einschätzung der Forscher aufwendig und langwierig werden könnte. (more…)

Berkeley Lab study on human skin microbiome finds archaea abundance associated with age
It turns out your skin is crawling with single-celled microorganisms – and they’re not just bacteria. A study by the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the Medical University of Graz has found that the skin microbiome also contains archaea, a type of extreme-loving microbe, and that the amount of it varies with age.
