Luft besteht aus Gasmolekülen und winzigen Teilchen – sogenannten Aerosolen. Der Großteil dieser in der Luft getragenen Teilchen ist nur einige Nanometer groß und nicht sichtbar. Die Detektion und experimentelle Beschreibung dieser Nanoteilchen ist für das  Verständnis von klimarelevanten Wolkeneigenschaften und der Bestimmung der Luftqualität von großer Bedeutung und daher ein wesentlicher Aspekt der Aerosolforschung.
