Cincinnati Zoo Adds 50,000 New Visits, Drives New Revenue With IBM Business Analytics

ARMONK, N.Y. & CINCINNATI, Ohio – 11 Jan 2011: IBM today announced that the Cincinnati Zoo is using IBM business analytics software to drive new revenue, improve member visits and integrate all ticketing, retail, and food sales operations. The zoo projects a $350,000 increase in revenue in the first year, and an additional 50,000 in new visits per year using the IBM analytics solution.

More than 1.2 million people a year visit Cincinnati Zoo’s exhibits, which feature over 500 animal and 3,000 plant species. The Zoo was also rated the No. 1 attraction locally and one of the top zoos in the nation by Zagat Survey. (more…)

Tiny Protozoa May Hold Key to World Water Safety

Right now, it looks a little like one of those plastic containers you might fill with gasoline when your car has run dry. But Scott Gallager is not headed to the nearest Mobil station. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) biologist has other, grander plans for his revolutionary Swimming Behavioral Spectrophotometer (SBS), which employs one-celled protozoa to detect toxins in water sources.

Not only is he working on streamlining the boxy-looking contraption—eventually even evolving it into a computer chip—but he sees it as a tool to potentially  “monitor all the drinking water in the world.

  • Diluted earnings per share of $2.82, up 18 percent;
  • 31 consecutive quarters of EPS growth, 13 of last 15 at double digits;
  • Full-year 2010 EPS expectations raised to at least $11.40;
  • Net income of $3.6 billion, up 12 percent;
  • Net margin of 14.8 percent, up 1.1 points;
  • Revenue of $24.3 billion, up 3 percent as reported, 4 percent adjusting for currency;
  • Growth markets revenue up 16 percent, 13 percent adjusting for currency;
  • BRIC countries revenue up 29 percent, 26 percent adjusting for currency;
  • Business analytics revenue up 14 percent;
  • Systems and Technology revenue up 10 percent, 11 percent adjusting for currency;
  • System z mainframe revenue up 15 percent; MIPS up 54 percent;
  • Software revenue excluding divested PLM operations, up 4 percent, 6 percent adjusting for currency; up 1 percent including divested PLM operations;
  • Services revenue up 2 percent, as reported and adjusting for currency;

IBM to Acquire BLADE Network Technologies

ARMONK, N.Y. – 27 Sep 2010: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire BLADE Network Technologies (BLADE), a privately held company based in Santa Clara, CA. BLADE specializes in software and devices that route data and transactions to and from servers. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2010, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions and applicable regulatory reviews. Financial terms were not disclosed.
