Was hindert eine Spezies daran, sich an eine immer größere Vielfalt von Lebensbedingungen anzupassen und sich geographisch immer weiter auszubreiten? Die Biomathematikerin Jitka Polechová, Elise-Richter-Stipendiatin an der Universität Wien, klärt in einem Artikel in der Fachzeitschrift PLoS Biology, wieso das Verbreitungsgebiet einer Spezies begrenzt ist. Die Theorie zeigt, dass lediglich zwei Größen, die sowohl in der Evolution als auch in der Ökologie wichtig sind, fundamental für die Stabilität des Verbreitungsgebiets sind: die räumliche Heterogenität in den Umweltbedingungen und die Größe der lokalen Populationen.

As injections or pills, drug inhibits an enzyme active in many cancer types

A new drug, known as OTS964, can eradicate aggressive human lung cancers transplanted into mice, according to a new report. The drug, given as a pill or by injection, inhibits the action of a protein that is overproduced by several tumor types, including lung and breast, but is rarely expressed in healthy adult tissues. Without this protein, cancer cells begin the cell-division process but fail to complete it and die. (more…)
