Columns of workers penetrate the forest, furiously gathering as much food and supplies as they can. They are a massive army that living things know to avoid, and that few natural obstacles can waylay. So determined are these legions that should a chasm or gap disrupt the most direct path to their spoils they simply build a new path — out of themselves. (more…)
Das Senckenberg Deutsche Entomologische Institut (SDEI) hat einen neuen Direktor: Der Biologe und Schmetterlingsforscher Professor Dr. Thomas Schmitt übernimmt heute die Leitung des Institutes. Verbunden mit dem Personalwechsel sind der Ausbau und eine personelle Aufstockung der Forschungseinrichtung.
Etwa 22.000 Schmetterlingsarten beherbergen die insgesamt 3 Millionen Insekten umfassende Sammlung des Senckenberg Deutschen Entomologischen Instituts in Müncheberg. Das freut auch Prof. Dr. Thomas Schmitt, der nun den Posten des Direktors am Forschungsinstitut übernimmt. (more…)
