George Michael Sentenced to Eight Weeks in Prison

British singer George Michael has been sentenced to eight weeks in jail for driving while under the influence of marijuana.

The ‘Freedom’ singer had previously pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drugs and possessing two cannabis joints when he was caught slumped at the wheel of his car after crashing into a photography shop in Hampstead, north London, on July 4.

George – real name Georgios Panayiotou – was handed the custodial sentence at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court.

The incident happened after the 47-year-old singer had attended a Gay Pride event in central London, Contactmusic.com reports.

In court Tuesday, the judge scolded Michael for taking a “dangerous and unpredictable mix” of marijuana and prescription medication while driving. “That’s a mistake which puts you and, on this occasion, the public at risk,” District Judge John Perkins said to singer.

Michael must also pay a $1,930 fine for the crime, and is barred from getting behind the wheel for five years, according to Entertainment Weekly.
