Die Mondlandung, Chemtrails oder der Coronavirus: Verschwörungstheorien sind allgegenwärtig, vor allem in den Sozialen Netzwerken. An der Universität Tübingen veröffentlicht ein EU-gefördertes Forschungsprojekt nun umfangreiche Forschungsergebnisse zum Thema. Unter Koordination von Professor Michael Butter hatten sich im Projekt „Comparative Analysis of Conspiracy Theories” (COMPACT) seit April 2016 insgesamt 160 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus 40 Ländern mit Verschwörungstheorien auseinander gesetzt. Mikroorganismen besitzen eine besonders schützende Zellwand – die sogenannte S-Schicht. Aber was passiert, wenn diese entfernt wird? Ein Team um Christa Schleper vom Department für Ökogenomik und Systembiologie der Universität Wien hat eine Methode, basierend auf einer CRISPR-Genschere entwickelt, um die Zellwand abzulösen und so ihre Funktion genauer zu untersuchen. Die ForscherInnen zeigen in ihrer aktuellen Studie, dass die fehlende S-Schicht einen großen Effekt auf die Zellteilung und die Infektion mit Viren hat.
