Cat owners fall into five categories in terms of their attitudes to their pets’ roaming and hunting, according to a new study.
University of Exeter researchers surveyed UK cat owners and found they ranged from “conscientious caretakers” concerned about cats’ impact on wildlife and who feel some responsibility, to “freedom defenders” who opposed restrictions on cat behaviour altogether. (more…)

Eine zähflüssige Biopaste, die sich gut verarbeiten lässt, schnell verfestigt und dafür eignet, selbst komplexe Strukturen im 3-D-Druck-Verfahren herzustellen: Ein Forschungsteam um Prof. Dr. Marie-Pierre Laborie von der Professur für Forstliche Biomaterialien der Universität Freiburg hat einen biologisch abbaubaren Kunststoff entwickelt, der auf Holz basiert und perspektivisch Anwendungsmöglichkeiten beispielsweise im Leichtbau eröffnet. Die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler haben ihre ersten Ergebnisse in den Fachzeitschriften Applied Bio Materials und Biomacromolecules vorgestellt. (more…)

Metastudie zeigt, wie Wissenschaft sich selbst kritisch hinterfragen und kontrollieren kann
Kritische Selbstreflexion im Wissenschaftsbetrieb ist unabdingbar – die derzeitige Corona-Krise bestätigt dies eindrücklich. In einem Experiment haben rund 200 internationale Forscher*innen unabhängig voneinander denselben Datensatz über Gehirnaktivität während einer Magnetresonanztomographie analysiert. Ziel war es abzuschätzen, wie variabel die Ergebnisse der bildgebenden Hirnforschung sein können. Zudem sollte überprüft werden, inwiefern sowohl die beteiligten als auch an den Auswertungen unbeteiligte Wissenschafter*innen die Ergebnisse vorhersagen konnten. (more…)
