A study by UCLA researchers reveals the cellular basis for how the hormone estrogen protects against damage to the central nervous system in women with multiple sclerosis, or MS. The researchers found that estrogen treatment exerts positive effects on two types of cells during disease — immune cells in the brain as well as cells called oligodendrocytes. (more…)
An economic analysis by North Carolina State University, Oregon State University and RTI International finds that the economic benefits of biodiversity and habitat preservation significantly outweigh the costs of off-road vehicle (ORV) restrictions at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Wie eine neue Studie unter der Beteiligung von Jürgen Kriwet von der Universität Wien herausgefunden hat, stellen die Zähne von Haien, die eine zusammenhängende Schneidekante haben, eine spezielle evolutionäre Anpassung dar.

Die Optimierung wirtschaftlicher Erfolge ohne Einschränkungen könnte für eine sichere Zukunft der Menschen Risiken bergen, so haben Wissenschaftler jetzt in einem mathematischen Experiment ermittelt. Zwar kann das Konzept wirtschaftlicher Optimierung die Kosten beispielsweise für die Reduzierung von Treibhausgasen wirkungsvoll senken. Der profitmaximierende Ansatz allein reicht aber nicht aus, um das Kippen kritischer Elemente im Erdsystem auf jeden Fall zu vermeiden – und ein solches Kippen könnte zu dramatischen Veränderungen unserer Lebensgrundlagen führen.
