AUSTIN, Texas — A team of researchers at the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin has developed a tiny, low-power device that mimics a fly’s hearing mechanism.
The new device could be used to build the next generation of hypersensitive hearing aids with intelligent microphones that adaptively focus only on those conversations or sounds that are of interest to the wearer. (more…)

Deutschland ist ein bedeutendes Importland für Abfall. Ein Grund: Die deutsche Abfalltechnik ist auf einem hohen Niveau, für manche Stoffe gibt es hier die besten Entsorgungsverfahren. Aber auch die geringere Auslastung einzelner Abfallverbrennungsanlagen sorgt dafür, dass Abfall importiert wird. Doch um welche Mengen geht es und wo kommen sie her? WWF-Studie warnt vor „importiertem Wasserrisiko“ in Zeiten der Globalisierung.
Gemüse aus Spanien, Baumwolle und Kleidung aus Indien, Metalle aus Südafrika, Rosen aus Kenia, Phosphor aus China: Deutschland hat bei vielen Waren ein besorgniserregendes, „importiertes Wasserrisiko“. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt eine Studie der Naturschutzorganisation WWF. „Von Reputationsschäden bis hin zu Standortschließungen, versteckte Wasserrisiken können im Extremfall Milliardenausfälle für deutsche Unternehmen nach sich ziehen“, erklärt Philipp Wagnitz, WWF-Referent und einer der Autoren. Der WWF-Studie zufolge ist Wasser hierzulande zwar ausreichend vorhanden, doch da Deutschland als weltweit drittgrößte Importnation auf ausländische Waren angewiesen ist, müssten Unternehmen und Politik lokal angepasste Strategien für die globale Wasserkrise entwickeln. Mit Hilfe einer Kombination von Klima- und Gletschermodellen haben Forscher um Ben Marzeion von der Universität Innsbruck eindeutig nachgewiesen, dass die Menschen für das weltweite Abschmelzen der Gletscher mitverantwortlich sind. In Science berichten die Forscher, dass von 1851 bis 2010 der vom Menschen verursachte Klimawandel rund ein Viertel zur Gletscherschmelze beitrug.
Schmelzende Gletscher lassen den Meeresspiegel steigen, verändern die saisonale Verfügbarkeit von Trinkwasser und können Auslöser von Naturkatastrophen sein. Sie stehen heute symbolisch für den vom Menschen verursachten Klimawandel. Allerdings reagieren Gletscher nur sehr langsam auf klimatische Veränderungen. „Typischerweise dauert es Jahrzehnte oder Jahrhunderte bis ein Gletscher sich an das Klima angepasst hat“, sagt Klimaforscher Ben Marzeion vom Institut für Meteorologie und Geophysik der Universität Innsbruck. Ihr Abschmelzen hat bereits mit dem Ende der kleinen Eiszeit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts begonnen. Natürliche Ursachen wie die veränderte Sonneneinstrahlung sind dafür genauso verantwortlich wie die vom Menschen ausgelösten Veränderungen. An international team of paleontologists has identified the exquisitely preserved brain in the fossil of one of the world’s first known predators that lived in the Lower Cambrian, about 520 million years ago. The discovery revealed a brain that is surprisingly simple and less complex than those known from fossils of some of the animal’s prey. (more…)
Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a substantially increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in older people, according to the most robust study of its kind ever conducted.
An international team, led by Dr David Llewellyn at the University of Exeter Medical School, found that study participants who were severely Vitamin D deficient were more than twice as likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
The team studied elderly Americans who took part in the Cardiovascular Health Study. They discovered that adults in the study who were moderately deficient in vitamin D had a 53 per cent increased risk of developing dementia of any kind, and the risk increased to 125 per cent in those who were severely deficient.
