Kognitionsbiologen erforschen universelle Eigenschaften der Weltmusik
Ist Musik wirklich eine “universelle Sprache”? Zwei Artikel in der aktuellen Ausgabe von Science unterstützen die These, dass Musik auf der ganzen Welt – trotz vieler Unterschiede – große Gemeinsamkeiten aufweist. ForscherInnen unter der Leitung von Samuel Mehr von der Universität Harvard haben eine umfassende Analyse der Musik verschiedenster Kulturen durchgeführt. Die Kognitionsbiologen Tecumseh Fitch und Tudor Popescu von der Universität Wien kommen zum Schluss, dass die menschliche Musikalität alle Kulturen der Welt vereint.

“Seeing others suffer is too stressful”: Why people buy, trade, donate medications on the black market
Altruism and a lack of access and affordability are three reasons why people with chronic illnesses turn to the “black market” for medicines and supplies, new research shows. Scientists at University of Utah Health and University of Colorado ran surveys to understand why individuals look beyond pharmacies and medical equipment companies to meet essential needs. Wissenschaftler der Universität Tübingen ermitteln, welche Eigenschaften der Zähne zur Rekonstruktion genetischer Verwandtschaft genutzt werden können
Genetische Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen zwischen individuellen Menschen oder auch Menschengruppen lassen sich anhand ihrer Zahnformen teilweise rekonstruieren. Dr. Hannes Rathmann und Dr. Hugo Reyes-Centeno von der Kolleg-Forschungsgruppe „Words, Bones, Genes, Tools“ an der Universität Tübingen haben nun mithilfe eines Algorithmus herausgearbeitet, welche der zahlreichen Zahnmerkmale sich für Verwandtschaftsanalysen besonders gut eignen und welche Zahnmerkmale weniger die Verwandtschaft, sondern eine ähnliche Anpassung an gleiche Umweltbedingungen widerspiegeln.
