Adron Harris, director of the Waggoner Center for Alcoholism and Addiction Research, and his team mapped the differences in gene expression between an alcoholic’s brain and a non-alcoholic’s brain. They found that, as a person becomes dependent on alcohol, thousands of genes in their brains are turned up or down, like a dimmer switch on a lightbulb, compared to the same genes in a healthy person’s brain. Manuela Baccarini und ihr Team an den Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL) der Universität Wien und der Medizinischen Universität Wien sind in der Entschlüsselung jener Mechanismen, die dem Leberkrebs zugrunde liegen, einen Schritt weiter gekommen. Mit “RAF1” identifizierten sie ein Protein, das normalerweise die Entwicklung von Krebs fördert, bei Leberkarzinomen aber den gegenteiligen Effekt hat: Bei gewissen Zelltypen bremst RAF1 das Wachstum der Tumorzellen. Die Ergebnisse wurden in der Fachzeitschrift “Nature Communications” veröffentlicht.
