Senckenberg-Wissenschaftler Dr. Gerald Mayr hat gemeinsam mit einem neuseeländischen Team eine bisher unbekannte fossile Riesenpinguinart beschrieben. Aus den Knochenfunden lässt sich ableiten, dass der Pinguin zu Lebzeiten eine Größe von mehr als 1,7 Metern und ein Körpergewicht von etwa 100 Kilogramm erreichte. In ihrer heute im Fachjournal „Nature Communications“ erschienenen Studie zeigen die Forscher, dass „Gigantismus“ keine Seltenheit bei frühen Pinguinen war und sich vermutlich als Folge der Flugunfähigkeit dieser Vögel entwickelte.
