Nobel Prize 2007

Here are the names of this year’s Nobel Prize Winners and the reasons for their achievements as cited in the announcements 

  • Medicine – Mario R. Capecchi (USA), Sir Martin J. Evans (UK), Oliver Smithies (USA) –“for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells” 
  • Physics – Albert Fert (France), Peter Grünberg (Germany) – “for the discovery of Giant Magnetoresistance” 
  • Chemistry – Gerhar Ertl (Germany) – “for his studies of chemical processes on solid surfaces”

  • British novelist Doris Lessing wins Nobel Literature Prize – “that epicist of the female experience, who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny”

  • Peace – Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. (USA) and U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change”

The Prize for Economics will be announced on Monday 15th of October
