Pasadena, CA — New work from the Carnegie Supernova Project provides the best-yet calibrations for using type Ia supernovae to measure cosmic distances, which has implications for our understanding of how fast the universe is expanding and the role dark energy may play in driving this process. Die Freiburger Biologen Dr. Simon Poppinga, Anna Westermeier und Prof. Dr. Thomas Speck haben in Kooperation mit Forschenden der Ruhr-Universität Bochum sowie des Instituts für Botanik der Tschechischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Třeboň erstmals detailliert die „Speisekarte“ der fleischfressenden Wasserfalle (Aldrovanda vesiculosa) rekonstruiert. Sie zeigen, dass die Pflanze keinerlei Beutetierpräferenz aufweist und alles fängt, was in die Falle passt und den Schnappmechanismus auszulösen vermag. (more…)

Simulationen zeigen, wie viel Wasser auf Proxima Centauri b vorhanden sein könnte
Erst 2016 haben WissenschafterInnen mit Proxima Centauri b den der Erde nächstgelegenen und potenziell bewohnbaren Exoplaneten entdeckt. Sogleich stellte sich die grundlegende Frage, ob dieser auch ausreichend Wasser auf seiner Oberfläche besitzt, dass dort Leben existieren könnte. Ein Forschungsteam der Universität Wien und der Universität Abu Dhabi hat nun mit Hilfe von Simulationen herausgefunden, dass dazu aufgrund der starken Strahlungsausbrüche der Sonne die Eisressourcen auf Kometen notwendig wären. Die Ergebnisse der Studie wurden kürzlich in der Printausgabe von “Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society” publiziert. (more…)
