Riesige Freude über Nationalpark Schwarzwald

Zahlreiche Umweltschützer in Baden-Württemberg atmen heute auf: Der erste Nationalpark im Land ist beschlossen. Greenpeace-Aktivisten sammelten sich gemeinsam mit anderen Umweltverbänden am Tag der Entscheidung vor dem Parlament in Stuttgart, um aus vollem Herzen „Danke“ zu sagen.

„Mensch und Natur sagen DANKE“ – mit diesem sechs Meter breitem Banner empfangen die Umweltverbände „Freundeskreis Nationalpark Schwarzwald“, NABU, BUND, Greenpeace und WWF vor dem Landtagsgebäude die Parlamentarier. Mit dabei: Ministerpräsident Winfried Kretschmann und Naturschutzminister Alexander Bonde. Der Dank gilt allen Umweltschützern, Menschen in den Gemeinden, in der Verwaltung und im Landesparlament, die sich für den Nationalpark eingesetzt hatten – aller Gegenwehr zum Trotz. (more…)

A decline in creativity? It depends on how you look

Research in recent years has suggested that young Americans might be less creative now than in decades past, even while their intelligence — as measured by IQ tests — continues to rise.

But new research from the University of Washington Information School and Harvard University, closely studying 20 years of student creative writing and visual artworks, hints that the dynamics of creativity may not break down as simply as that. (more…)

‘Hackathon’ teaches Chicago high school students the social power of Big Data

Like urban bike-sharing programs everywhere, Chicago’s Divvy must contend with a key problem: due to commuting patterns, some bike stations empty out fast while others fill up quickly, leaving no space for more drop-offs.

Anxiety disorders are common in children and adolescents, affecting up to 25 percent of the youth population. Anxiety causes distress and functional impairment and, if left untreated, can result in bad grades, problems at home and increased rates of psychiatric disorders in adulthood.

These risks constitute a significant public health burden, and they underscore the importance of continued efforts to understand the cause and course of the disorder. (more…)

Philippinen: Die strategischen Ziele der Nothilfe

Mehrere Nato-Staaten verschaffen sich durch den Nothilfe-Einsatz auf den Philippinen einen strategischen Vorteil gegenüber China.

Wie Presseberichte bestätigen, nutzen mehrere NATO-Staaten und der NATO-Kooperationspartner Japan die Taifun-Katastrophe auf den Philippinen, um Widerstände gegen die militärische Präsenz vor allem der USA auszuhebeln. Das Mittel dazu ist demnach die Entsendung von Flugzeugträgern mitsamt Begleitflotte durch die Vereinigten Staaten und Grossbritannien – zu Zwecken der Nothilfe. Im Hinblick auf US-Soldaten, die mit Kriegsschiffen, Militärflugzeugen und Kampfhubschraubern Hilfsgüter transportieren, urteilt die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung vom 16. November 2013: «Die Amerikaner treten mit ihrer umfangreichen Nothilfe einem alten Verbündeten zur Seite und nutzen zugleich die Gelegenheit, sich einen strategischen Vorteil in der Region zu verschaffen.»

Dank der militärischen «Katastrophendiplomatie» könne «das amerikanische Militär die Freundschaften in der Region vertiefen und sich eine militärische Präsenz sichern, ohne dass diese wirkt, als richte sie sich gegen China». Mit Blick auf die «Kritik an der vermehrten Präsenz amerikanischer Kriegsschiffe» in der philippinischen Bevölkerung heisst es: «Die humanitären Einsätze sind da ein willkommenes Gegenargument.» (more…)

From Mercury to Morocco, and onward to Yale: a meteorite’s tale

Talk about a precious stone — the largest piece of the only known meteorite from the planet Mercury has found its way to Yale, where it is now on display at the Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Known as NWA 7325, the fist-size, greenish space rock is a rarity among rarities: there just aren’t many verified planetary meteorites. Scientists know of about 70 from Mars and, until now, none from any of the other planets in Earth’s solar system. There are about 180 known meteorites from the moon. NWA 7325 is the first believed to be from Mercury. (more…)

MARKHAM, ON & HALIFAX NS – 27 Nov 2013: IBM today announced it is contributing a multi-million dollar private cloud to a consortium of post-secondary institutions in Nova Scotia. The system, the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada, will form a shared computing platform enabling the schools to together create new curriculum and conduct research, all aimed at better equipping graduates with high-demand analytics skills to drive Nova Scotia’s economy.

The system, operational in early 2014, is being hosted at Dalhousie University but will also be accessible through a simple, single log-on process to faculty and students at Acadia University, Cape Breton University, Mount Saint Vincent University, Nova Scotia Community College, Saint Mary’s University and St. Francis Xavier University. New Technique Controls Dimensions of Gold Nanorods while Manufacturing on a Large Scale

North Carolina State University researchers have a developed a technique for efficiently producing nanoscale gold rods in large quantities while simultaneously controlling the dimensions of the nanorods and their optical properties. The optical properties of gold nanorods make them desirable for use in biomedical applications ranging from imaging technologies to cancer treatment. (more…)
