25 Years after the Exxon Valdez, Sea Otter Population at Pre-Spill Levels

ANCHORAGE — Nearly 25 years after the Exxon Valdez oil spill injured wildlife off the coast of Alaska, a new report issued today by the U.S. Geological Survey indicates that sea otters have returned to pre-spill numbers within the most heavily oiled areas of Prince William Sound.

Sea otters in the path of the oil incurred heavy mortality when 42 million liters of Prudhoe Bay crude oil were spilled in Prince William Sound in March 1989, with an estimated loss of several thousand otters. Through long-term data collection and analysis, scientists found that sea otters were slow to recover, likely because of chronic exposure to lingering oil. Other studies documented persistence of oil in the sea otter’s intertidal feeding habitats. (more…)

Österreich ist seit Ende der Habsburger-Monarchie ein Bundesstaat. Wie sich dieser Bundesstaat aber genau gegründet hat, ist bis heute unter Rechtshistorikern umstritten: Von oben, indem der Zentralstaat Länder „einrichtet“, oder von unten durch Zusammenschluss der Länder? Ein Innsbrucker Jurist geht dieser Frage nun nach.

„Österreich ist ein Bundesstaat.“ So lautet der erste Absatz des Artikels 2 des österreichischen Bundes-Verfassungsgesetzes bereits seit Inkrafttreten der ersten Version dieser Verfassung 1920. Wie dieser Bundesstaat aber konkret zustande gekommen ist, darüber herrscht unter Rechtshistorikern Uneinigkeit. Der Jurist Sebastian Strasak versucht nun in einem vom Tiroler Wissenschaftsfonds geförderten Projekt, diese Fragen zu klären. (more…)

Tag des Artenschutzes: Mit Microchips gegen Wilderer

Um Kenias bedrohte Nashorn Population zu retten, gehen Umweltschützer neue Wege. Möglichst jedes Tier soll zum Schutz vor Wilderern mit Mikrochips gekennzeichnet werden. Diese werden in die Hörner der Dickhäuter eingepflanzt. Insgesamt mehr als 1000 Tiere sollen so ausgestattet werden. Im Masai Mara Naturschutzgebiet und dem Lake Nakuru Nationalpark wurden nun die ersten Tiere behandelt. Kenia gehört damit zu den Pionieren im Einsatz von modernsten Technologien zum Schutz von durch Wilderei bedrohten charismatischen Tierarten wie Nashorn und Elefant. (more…)

Pizza Herb Could Help Curb Foodborne Illness

Carvacrol, the primary active component in oregano oil, effectively kills norovirus, a common cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in hospitals, schools and cruise ships

A study led by University of Arizona researcher Kelly Bright has found that carvacrol – the substance in oregano oil that gives the pizza herb its distinctive warm and aromatic smell and flavor – is effective against norovirus, causing the breakdown of the virus’ tough outer coat. The research is published in the Society for Applied Microbiology’s Journal of Applied Microbiology. (more…)

Grant Connette received a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Davidson College in 2008. In the Fall of 2009 he began a Ph.D. program in Biology at the University of Missouri. His general research interests include various aspects of the population ecology, movement behavior, and landscape-scale distributions of animals. Much of his current research focuses on the behavior, population dynamics, and landscape ecology of terrestrial salamanders in forest landscapes managed for timber production. (more…)

Für eine Politisierung des digitalen Diskurses!

Was bei den Themen Netzneutralität und NSA-Skandal ins Auge fällt, ist, dass es sich dabei prinzipiell um internationale Debatten handelt, die auf nationaler Ebene nicht allein gelöst werden können. Denn (noch) ist das Internet international angelegt. Wie kollektive Debatten im Internet auf kreative Art und Weise geführt werden können, zeigen etwa Initiativen wie die ausgerufene „Blogparade“ – wie Partizipationsprojekte international funktionieren können das Projekt Hatebase. Zum anderen wird deutlich, dass es sich bei den Debatten über Netzpolitik und Digitalisierung um gesellschaftliche Debatten handelt, die politisch geführt werden müssen. Der Internet-Aktivist Jens Best fand dafür beim Digitalen Salon vor ein paar Tagen die polemischen, aber richtigen Worte: „Wenn Angela Merkel sich auf das Schengen-Netz einlässt, wird sie die Kanzlerin der Deutschen Telekom“.
