Satellite Shows High Productivity from U.S. Corn Belt

Data from satellite sensors show that during the Northern Hemisphere’s growing season, the Midwest region of the United States boasts more photosynthetic activity than any other spot on Earth, according to NASA and university scientists.

Healthy plants convert light to energy via photosynthesis, but chlorophyll also emits a fraction of absorbed light as a fluorescent glow that is invisible to the naked eye. The magnitude of the glow is an excellent indicator of the amount of photosynthesis, or gross productivity, of plants in a given region. (more…)

Seven a day keeps the reaper at bay

Eating seven or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day reduces your risk of death at any point in time by 42% compared to eating less than one portion, reports a new UCL study.

Researchers used the Health Survey for England to study the eating habits of 65,226 people representative of the English population between 2001 and 2013, and found that the more fruit and vegetables they ate, the less likely they were to die at any age. Eating seven or more portions reduces the specific risks of death by cancer and heart disease by 25% and 31% respectively. The research also showed that vegetables have significantly higher health benefits than fruit. (more…)

Nachdem seit der Rückkehr der Wölfe im Jahr 2000 bereits der achte Wolf illegal in Deutschland erschossen wurde, plant der NABU die Anschaffung von kugelsicheren Westen zum Schutz der streng geschützten Tiere. Damit sollen die Muttertiere der 26 in Deutschland lebenden Rudel für die nun anstehende Welpenaufzucht vor illegalen Tötungen geschützt werden. (more…)

Anpassung an Klimawandel: jetzt vorbeugen und Schäden begrenzen

Bei Investitionen den künftigen Klimawandel berücksichtigten

Der Klimawandel wird global bereits bestehende Risiken, wie Armut, Umweltverschmutzung und Artensterben, verstärken und die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung abbremsen. Darauf verweist der Zwischenstaatliche Ausschusses für Klimaänderungen (IPCC) im zweiten Teil des aktuellen Weltklimaberichtes zu Klimafolgen, Verwundbarkeit und Anpassung an den Klimawandel. Dieser wurde heute im japanischen Yokohama veröffentlicht. Untersuchungen des Umweltbundesamtes (UBA) zeigen, wie man sich rechtzeitig gegen häufigere Hitze, Dürre und Überflutung wappnen kann. Wird der Klimawandel beispielsweise in Investitionsplänen, bei der Durchführung von Großprojekten oder in der Raumplanung vorsorgend berücksichtigt, können Schäden oft vermindert oder ganz vermieden werden. Researchers Describe Oxygen’s Different Shapes

Oxygen-16, one of the key elements of life on earth, is produced by a series of reactions inside of red giant stars. Now a team of physicists, including one from North Carolina State University, has revealed how the element’s nuclear shape changes depending on its state, even though other attributes such as spin and parity don’t appear to differ. Their findings may shed light on how oxygen is produced.

Carbon and oxygen are formed when helium burns inside of red giant stars. Carbon-12 forms when three helium-4 nuclei combine in a very specific way (called the triple alpha process), and oxygen-16 is the combination of a carbon-12 and another helium-4 nucleus. (more…)

Japan muss seine umstrittene Waljagd im Südpolarmeer beenden. Das japanische Programm verstoße gegen das internationale Walfangmoratorium, das kommerziellen Walfang verbietet, und erfülle keine wissenschaftlichen Forschungszwecke. So entschied heute der Internationale Gerichtshof in Den Haag. Australien hatte 2010 vor dem UN-Gericht Klage gegen Japan erhoben. (more…)

‘Melbourne Shuffle’ secures cloud data

Encryption might not be enough for all that data stored in the cloud. An analysis of usage patterns — which files are accessed and when — can give away secrets as well. Computer scientists at Brown have developed an algorithm to sweep away those digital footprints. It’s a complicated series of dance-like moves they call the Melbourne Shuffle.

Physik-Wettbewerb: Schülerforschungszentrum Nordhessen richtet Deutschlandfinale aus

Wie funktioniert die perfekte Wasserbombe oder ein Kraftwerk aus Teelichtern? Jugendliche lösen beim bundesweiten Physik-Wettbewerb anspruchsvolle Rätsel – experimentell und theoretisch.

Im Finale vom 11. bis 13. April 2014 stellen sie ihre Lösungen in englischsprachigen Präsentationen und Diskussionen vor. Austragungsort ist das Schülerforschungszentrum Nordhessen in Kassel. Das Turnier dient zugleich als Vorentscheid für den internationalen Physik-Weltcup. (more…)
