Milchstraße “neu” in 3D

Mithilfe neuester technischer Methoden hat ein internationales AstronomInnenteam unter Beteiligung von João Alves von der Universität Wien erstmals Daten des ESA-Satelliten “Hipparcos” in 3D visualisiert und im Fachjournal “Astronomy & Astrophysics” veröffentlicht. Diese Darstellung enthüllt nicht nur neue Gruppierungen von Sternen in der Nachbarschaft der Sonne, sondern stellt die Existenz des “Gould Belt” in Frage – eine berühmte ringförmige Struktur von Sternen in der Milchstraße. 3D-Visualisierungen könnten darüber hinaus besondere Bedeutung für die ESA-Mission “Gaia” haben, die die Milchstraße mit bislang unerreichter Genauigkeit kartieren wird.

The eternal ebb and flow of tides — 24 x 7 x 365 — makes them a dependable source of energy, but how to harness all that, especially in shallow water? Shreyas Mandre and colleagues at Brown have developed an efficient water wing and optimized its performance with a “secret sauce.”
