How to 'Bookmark' your favourite tools in ArcGIS

Post by Admin »

Sometimes we use some tools more often than others. In that case, it’s a good idea to bookmark them for quick access. It’s easy to bookmark tools in ArcGIS. First let’s set the ‘Bookmarks’ menu on the Main Menu bar.

Go to Tools, and click on Customize. The following ‘Customize’ window will open. Click on Commands. Here you will see two options – Categories and Commands. Scroll down the Categories and click on [Menus]. You will see on the right, under Commands, appears all the options or buttons related to [Menus]. And top of it is the ‘Bookmarks’ option.

Drag and drop it anywhere on the Main Menu. Let’s say, in this case we set it next to View. And if you now click on Bookmarks, you will see it has only two options as follows:

But you would like to bookmark your favourite tools or buttons that you often use. Some examples here:

Now from the Categories (your Customize window is still open) scroll down to Tools and drag and drop the ‘Add XY Data’ onto your newly set-up Bookmarks menu. Let’s say you use Visual Basic Editor often as well, so click on it and drag and drop it onto the Bookmarks menu like before.

Now, you also need the GIS dictionary often. So on Categories scroll down to Help, and from Commands click on GIS Dictionary and drag and drop it onto your Bookmarks menu.

When you are done, close the Customize window. However, if in future you will need to add more tools or even to delete some of the tools you added already in Bookmarks, you have to first open this Customize window from Tools Menu. Now your new Bookmarks menu looks like this:

So enjoy bookmarking your favourite tools in ArcGIS.

Have fun. :)
